Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Skilled Migration Steps (2024-25)

The ACT offers state nomination for two main skilled visas:

  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

 

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

  • Permanent residency for skilled workers

  • Occupation must be on the ACT Critical Skills List

  • Positive skills assessment and minimum 65 points (incl. state points)

  • Meet the Department of Home Affairs and ACT criteria

Steps

  1. Submit EOI via SkillSelect (choose ACT)

  2. Submit Canberra Matrix application (points-based)

  3. Await invitation from the ACT Government

  4. If invited, apply for ACT nomination within 14 days (attach documents)

  5. On nomination, apply for the visa with Home Affairs

 

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

  • Provisional visa leading to PR (for regional ACT)

  • Same requirements as above, for regional locations

 

ACT Nomination Streams

  • Canberra Matrix: Points-based system considering work, English, study, investment, and family ties

  • Both onshore and offshore applicants are eligible

 

Invitation Rounds and Processing

  • Invitation rounds are held monthly

  • Applications are usually processed in 4-8 weeks
