How to Migrate to Australia as a Fashion Designer (Tailor)

If you’re a creative mind who loves fashion, sketching, sewing, or styling, there’s good news. Fashion designer is a recognised occupation in Australia’s skilled migration program. Whether you’ve studied fashion or gained your skills through experience, this blog explains how you can migrate to Australia as a Fashion Designer (ANZSCO 232311)

Let’s break it down step by step..

Is Fashion Designer on the Skilled List?

Yes, it is!
Fashion Designer is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This means you can apply for several visa types, including:

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (491 visa)
  • Employer-sponsored visas (like 482 and 186)

First Step: Get a Positive Skills Assessment

Before applying for any visa, you need to prove that your skills and experience match the Australian standard.  the occupation, it is done through a skills assessment body called VETASSESS.

What VETASSESS Looks At:

  • A qualification (usually a diploma or degree in fashion or design)
  • At least 1 year of paid work experience in the last 5 years (after your qualification)

What if you don’t have a fashion degree?

That’s okay, if you’ve worked for many years in fashion, you may qualify under a different pathway. You’ll need:

  • 5+ years of full-time fashion design experience (no qualification), or
  • 3+ years plus a related AQF Certificate

Not sure which one fits you? That’s what we’re here for

You’ll need:

  • Education certificates (diploma, degree, etc.)
  • Employment reference letters
  • Portfolio or samples of work (in some cases)
  • CV/resume
  • Payslips or tax documents (to prove work experience)
  • ID (passport, national ID)

How Much Does the Skills Assessment Cost?

The current VETASSESS fee for a Full Skills Assessment (for migration purposes) is: AUD $1,070 for most online applications

Note: This is a one-time fee for assessing your qualification and work experience.

Always check the official VETASSESS website or ask us to confirm the latest fees  prices can change without notice.

Get Your Documents Ready

For the assessment and visa, you’ll need:

  • Your fashion qualification certificate (if you have one)
  • A detailed CV
  • Reference letters from employers
  • Payslips, tax records, or contracts (to prove work)
  • A portfolio of your fashion work
  • Passport/ID

We’ll guide you on how to package all this properly.

Once you have a positive skills assessment, the next stage is to let the Australian government know so you can be invited to apply for visa.

Meet the English Language Requirement

Most skilled visas need proof of English. Here are the basic scores:

  • IELTS: 6.0 in each band
  • PTE: 50 in each section

Higher scores give you more points, so we’ll help you choose the best test for your situation.

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Once your skills assessment is approved, you’ll create a profile on SkillSelect and lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI). This tells the government you’re ready and waiting for a visa invitation.

You’ll include:

  • Your background
  • Work and education details
  • English score
  • Skills assessment result

Now, it’s a matter of points and patience.

Get State Nomination

If your points are low or you want to boost your chances, applying for state nomination is a smart move. States like South Australia, Tasmania, and regional areas often nominate creative roles like fashion designers.

Each state has different requirements, and they change often. We’ll help you track which states are open for you.

Get Invited & Apply for the Visa

Once invited, you can apply for your visa. This is the final step uploading your documents, paying your visa fee, and waiting for approval.

If approved, you’re ready to live, work, and thrive in Australia as a qualified fashion designer.
