From Study to Permanent Residency: Step-by-Step Guide for Nigerians and Africans in Australia

For many Nigerians and Africans studying in Australia, the ultimate goal is to turn that temporary student visa into a Permanent Residency (PR). This transition can open doors to full work rights, Medicare, and eventual citizenship, but the journey requires planning, strategy, and the right timing.

Afrovo has helped students successfully navigate this path. Here’s a clear step-by-step roadmap from enrolment to PR.

Step 1 – Choose a PR-Friendly Course

Not all courses lead to PR.

  • Look for occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

  • Consider regional universities for extra points

  • Ensure your course duration meets PR pathway requirements

Afrovo Tip: We match you with courses that boost migration prospects.

Step 2 – Gain Relevant Work Experience While Studying

  • Use your 48-hour-per-fortnight work rights wisely

  • Target jobs in your future skilled occupation

  • Keep contracts and payslips—these may support your PR application

Step 3 – Apply for Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

After your studies:

  • This visa allows you to stay and work in Australia temporarily

  • Length depends on qualification and study location

  • Gives you time to gain experience, complete skills assessment, and boost points

Step 4 – Get Your Skills Assessed

  • Choose the right assessing authority (e.g., Engineers Australia, VETASSESS)

  • Prepare documents and references according to their requirements

  • Processing can take 8–12 weeks

Afrovo Tip: Start this process as early as possible.

Step 5 – Improve Your Points Score

  • Achieve Superior English for +20 points

  • Take NAATI CCL for +5 points

  • Apply for state nomination for +5–15 points

  • Consider regional employment for +5 points

Step 6 – Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

  • Only claim points you can prove

  • Target states that need your occupation

  • Keep your EOI updated until you receive an invitation

Step 7 – Apply for PR Visa (189, 190, or 491)

  • 189 Visa – Independent, points-based, no sponsorship required

  • 190 Visa – State nominated, extra 5 points

  • 491 Visa – Regional provisional visa, extra 15 points, pathway to PR
