As a Nigerian or African student in Australia, you might find your initial course isn’t the right fit, whether due to career goals, interest changes, or unexpected challenges. But switching courses isn’t as simple as enrolling in a new program; if you do it incorrectly, you could breach your Student Visa (Subclass 500) conditions.
At Afrovo, we help students change courses legally and strategically so their visa remains valid.
Rules for Switching Courses
If you’re studying at a university or college, you generally cannot switch providers until you’ve completed the first six months of your principal course—unless you get a release letter.
Your new course must be registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
You must maintain full-time enrolment and meet attendance requirements.
Some visas have course-specific conditions—check before switching.
Review Your Visa Conditions
Check the Department of Home Affairs website or consult Afrovo.
Discuss with Your Current Institution
Request advice and, if necessary, a release letter.
Choose a New CRICOS-Registered Course
Afrovo can help you find a course that aligns with your goals and visa rules.
Update Your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
This must be done for the new course before starting.

Certain changes require direct notification to immigration.
