Skill assessment is simply the process where a recognised body checks that your overseas qualifications, training and work experience match the Australian standards for the job (the nominated occupation) you are applying for.
Many skilled-migration and employer-sponsored visa stream require a positive skills assessment before you can move to the next step (Expression of Interest, nomination, visa application).
If you skip or fail this step, you’ll likely be blocked from proceeding even if you meet other criteria (like points, experience, English).
So the key message: “Before the visa, we must secure your Skill Assessment“
In Australia, there are over 40 different Skills Assessing Authorities. The appropriate body for you depends entirely on your specific occupation and its ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code.

In essence, skills assessments promote fairness, transparency, and quality assurance — helping professionals and organizations make informed, evidence-based decisions.

How the Australian Government is Prioritising Skilled Migration (and why this matters for your promotion)
The government’s invitation rounds via SkillSelect show how many people are being invited for skilled migration visa subclasses (such as Subclass 189, 491) and which occupations are being prioritised.
For example: On 21 August 2025, invitation rounds for Subclass 189 and 491 were released. You can see it here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skillselect/invitation-rounds
The skilled-occupation lists (such as the Combined List) set out which professions are eligible – e.g., trades, professional occupations.
The priority is clearly on occupations in demand and meeting labour-market needs.
